Alloy was contracted to perform the environmental remediation and selective demolition of the former 100,000-square-foot historic library in the very heart of the west campus. Alloy had to carefully dismantle and perform abatement on the seven-story library by hand to preserve the historic structure. This phase of the renovation focused on the original 1928 library building and its 1948 addition, including the iconic Gothic Reading Room and Mary Duke Biddle Rare Book Room, which together comprise the newly named David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

Alloy also performed interior abatement and demolition of the main lobby and hand-demolished stacks to make way for new state-of-the-art stacks.

The most challenging portion of this project was the logistics of an occupied library with an active student campus environment. With an aggressive schedule and limited space, Alloy had to develop a waste management program that increased productivity for Alloy and the subcontractors that shared the same workspace.
