Alloy Group was contracted by Hoar Construction to perform the structural demolition of the Colony Square Mall located in the heart of Mid-Town Atlanta. The demolition of this three-story, 180,000 sqft structure has had its challenges. The first of these being the location of the project. Colony Square Mall is located on Peachtree Street in Mid-Town Atlanta, one of the busiest areas of Atlanta. Not only is the mall located in a high traffic area, the structure itself is connected to two high-rise office buildings and one high-rise luxury hotel. With each of these buildings remaining active, noise and dust control have been a priority for our team. In addition to its location, this project has a very specific challenge, the mall itself rests atop an active three-story subterranean parking deck. With the help of our inhouse engineer, Alloy designed a demolition plan that incorporates shoring and bracing of the parking structure below and allows for our heavy equipment to safely complete the demolition above. This design-build demolition has constantly evolved due to the actual construction of the structure differing from the as-builts. This has created inconsistencies with our progress and required constant revisions to our demolition methods. Even with these delays, our team has remained on schedule and within budget. Over the course of 6 months, our crews have completed 2 of 3 phases for this project and safely removed over 40,000 tons of concrete and 5,000 tons of C&D.
